Leviathan Rising Sound Works
The project Leviathan Rising includes two original sound works; Leviathan Rising and Ebb Free, both of which are available for listening below.
The first composition, Leviathan Rising, weaves together layers of underwater sound recorded using a hydrophone beneath the surface of the Duwamish River, the city of Seattle’s last remaining river which is at once an industrial waterway, a salmon spawning ecosystem, and a tribal fishing ground. Sound travels great distance underwater and the maritime industry’s acoustic footprint is another layer of unseen impact upon the Salish Sea ecosystem. The twang of welding within the hull of a trans-oceanic barge melds with the pulsing heartbeat of a distant propeller, and other strange unknown sounds.
The second composition, Ebb Free, is inspired by the slow drift of the Duwamish as the tide pulls back, emptying debris from the river to the sea. The piece includes Fender Rhodes piano together with field recordings made listening to the hulls of various ships as they reverberated across the Salish Sea.
